The general theme of the conference is "European philosophy of healthcare and bioethics". The following topics will be addressed:


European issues in philosophy of healthcare and bioethics

REGISTRATION


A registration form will be circulated by the ESPMH Secretariat. It should be returned to this Secretariat as soon as possible, but not later than 1th April, 2002, including the registration fee.

REGISTRATION FEE


The registration fee for participants who are not a member of ESPMH is more expensive.


The registration fee includes: 2 lunches, refreshments during breaks, 1 conference dinner, abstract-book.


Participants:

paid before April 1, 2002: ESPMH member: 200 euro; not-ESPMH member: 250 euro.

paid after April 1, 2002: ESPMH member: 225 euro; not-ESPMH member: 275 euro.


Accompanying persons:

paid before April 1, 2002: 100 euro

paid after April 1, 2002: 110 euro

ACCOMMODATION


The accommodation in Malta must be arranged by the conference participants themselves. The organisation will provide a list of potential hotels and hostels in various price categories with telephone and fax numbers, facilitating the process of reserving accommodation.

All hotels are reserving rooms for ESPMH conference (21th-25th August, 2002) until 31th March, 2002. Quote ESPMH when booking.
Although the Suncrest Hotel is more expensive, it is by far the best four star hotel on the list. The conference is located here.


TRANSPORTATION


If you arrive at Malta airport there is a special bus service arranged to the hotels. This service is less expensive than any regular services as well as more convenient.
You can order this service in advance at the local organization. The choices are:
- chauffeur driven a/c/ Mercedes for 1 to 3 pax (9.00 LM per trip)
- mini-bus for 4 to 7 pax (LM 16.00 per trip)
- mini-bus for 8 to 11 pax (LM 22.00 per trip)

Prices for each excursion is LM 6.00 per person, inclusive of 53 seater a/c coach, qualified English speaking guide and museum entrance tickets.

ABSTRACT BOOK


The abstract book will be published in Malta at conference registration. Full manuscripts can be submitted for publication in the ESPMH journal "Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy". Presentators are invited to read the instructions for authors, and to submit an appropriately prepared article for review.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

In cooperation with the National Bioethics Consultative Committee of Malta, the
European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care (ESPMH) is scheduled
to convene for its sixteenth annual conference in Qawra, Malta (August 21-24,
2002).

The general theme of the conference is "European philosophy of healthcare
and bioethics". Abstracts are invited, addressing the following topics:

  • European issues in philosophy of health care and bioethics

  • are there typically European approaches, views, theories, and methods in
    philosophy of healthcare and bioethics?

  • multiculturalism, bioethics and health policies
  • EU and candidate countries: What are the expectations, benefits and costs of
    joining the EU? - phenomenology, hermeneutics and health care

  • theories of health and disease in European traditions
  • harmonizing legal and moral frameworks through International organisations?
  • social justice and health care systems
  • the roles of history and religion in European approaches of medicine, health
    care, disease and suffering

  • theory of medicine as a teaching subject - ethical theory and clinical
    practice

  • cultural differences in healthcare education

The program of the conference includes plenary sessions as well as parallel
sessions. Papers will be selected from abstracts submitted to the Conference'
Program Committee.

Papers addressing the philosophical, ethical and historical dimensions of the
conference topic are encouraged. Persons wishing to present papers at the
conference should submit an abstract (500 words maximum) before December 1,
