XVIIth EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON PHILOSOPHY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH CARE

"EUROPEAN INTEGRATION - PHILOSOPHY AND ETHICS OF HEALTHCARE"

The conference will be organised by the European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care (ESPMH) in cooperation with the Lithuanian Bioethics Committee, the Department of Medical History and Ethics (Medical Faculty of Vilnius University), Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO, the Central and East European Association of Bioethics (CEEAB).

FOCUS

The general theme of the conference is on philosophical and ethical issues in relation to European integration, particularly in the area of medicine and health care. Now that it is clear that the European Union will be expanded with new member states, it is imperative that the ethical reflection on medicine and health care is stimulates in all European countries. The following topics will be addressed in the conference:


  • European issues in philosophy of healthcare and bioethics
  • Development of medical philosophy and bioethics
  • Institutionalisation of philosophy and ethics in healthcare
  • Harmonisation of medical reseach regulations
  • Human rights and health care
  • Solidarity and health care
  • Just health care
  • The gap between 'academic' and 'bureaucratic' bioethics
  • Commercialisation in health care
  • Patenting and genetics
  • Genetic/health related databases
  • Use of biological materials
  • (Future) European guidelines in biomedical reseach

LANGUAGE

The language during the conference is English. Simultaneous translation is not available.

The registration process, the call for abstract, development of the program, publication of program announcements and mailings to participants will be taken care of by the ESPMH Secretariat in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

REGISTRATION

A registration form will be circulated by the ESPMH Secretariat. It should be returned to this Secretariat as soon as possible, but not later than 1th April, 2003, including the registration fee which should be transferred to the ESPMH treasurer according to the data provided on the registration form.

REGISTRATION FEE

The registration fee for participants who are not a member of ESPMH is more expensive.

The registration fee includes: 2 lunches, refreshments during breaks, 1 conference dinner, abstract-book.
Participants:
paid before April 1, 2003: ESPMH member: 210 euro; not-ESPMH member: 260 euro.
paid after April 1, 2003: ESPMH member: 225 euro; not-ESPMH member: 275 euro.

Accompanying persons:
paid before April 1, 2003: 100 euro
paid after April 1, 2003: 110 euro

ACCOMMODATION

The accommodation in Vilnius must be arranged by the conference participants themselves. The organization will provide a list of potential hotels and hostels in various price categories with telephone and fax numbers, facilitating the process of reserving accommodation.

The price of the hotels situated within walking distance from the University is presently negotiated. The average price of a single room in these hotels will be approx. 90 euros. It will take some time to have a full list of hotels.
We are also looking for cheaper hotels/bed and breakfast arrangements for those participants who prefer less expensive accommodation.

TRANSPORTATION

The airport in Vilnius has connections to various European capitals. You must be aware that you need to pay visa upon entering the country at the local customs office. We will make a list of countries, which citizens do not need visas to enter Lithuania.

If you arrive at Vilnius airport, it will be approx. 4-5 euros to reach the hotels by taxi.

ABSTRACT BOOK

The abstract book will be published in Vilnius at conference registration. Full manuscripts can be submitted for publication in the ESPMH journal "Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy". Presentators are invited to read the instructions for authors, and to submit an appropriately prepared article for review.
