This conference will be organised by the European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Healthcare (ESPMH) and the Cardiff Institute for Society, Health and Ethics
Focus

The focus of the conference is on ethical and philosophical issues in public health. Abstracts addressing the philosophical dimensions of the following topics can be submitted:
The concept of public health
The relationship between individual and population health
The relation between clinical medicine and public health
Health as a public good
Health as a human right
Resource allocation in public health
Social inequalities in health
Personal responsibility for health and (un)healthy behaviours
The role of law in public health
Ethical issues in public health research
Public health and genetics
Philosophical and ethical issues in relation to health systems research; health impact assessment; health promotion; vaccination / immunisation

Registration

A registration form will be circulated by the ESPMH Secretariat. Please return it to this Secretariat as soon as possible, but no later than 1 April 2007, including the registration fee, which should be transferred to the ESPMH treasurer according to the data provided on the registration form. The registration fee includes: 2 lunches, refreshments during breaks, welcome reception (Wednesday), and conference dinner (Friday) and an abstract book.
The registration fee for accompanying persons includes welcome reception (Wednesday), conference dinner (Friday) and a tour of Cardiff including lunch (Thursday)

NB: The registration fee for participants who are not a member of ESPMH is higher than for ESPMH members.

Accommodation

The accommodation in Cardiff will have to be arranged by the conference participants themselves.
Social Programme

The following social activities will be offered:
Welcome reception on Wednesday (15 August)
Tour of Cardiff with visit to the National Museum of Wales and lunch at Cardiff Bay on Thursday for accompanying persons only (16 August)
Conference dinner on Friday (17 August)
Abstract Book

The abstract book will be handed out in Cardiff upon conference registration. Full manuscripts can be submitted for publication in the ESPMH journal "Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy. A European Journal". Participants are invited to read the instructions for authors on the website of the Journal (http://www.springerlink.com) and to submit an appropriately prepared article for review.

Hotels: Cardiff has a number of high quality hotels in the city centre, most of which are within walking distance of the Conference venue. The Cardiff Hilton, Cardiff Thistle and Angel hotels are the most convenient in terms of distance from the Conference venue. The Marriott is the nearest to Cardiff Central Station.
